The core process of a commercial reverse osmosis system typically consists of three main stages: pretreatment, reverse osmosis membrane separation, and post-treatment. First, raw water enters the pretreatment unit, where it passes through equipment such as multi-media filters, activated carbon filters, and softening units to remove suspended solids, residual chlorine, organic matter, and calcium and magnesium ions, reducing water turbidity and hardness, and protecting the subsequent reverse osmosis membranes from contamination and scaling. The effectiveness of pretreatment directly impacts the lifespan of the reverse osmosis membranes and system operational stability.

 

The pretreated water then enters a high-pressure pump for pressurization before passing through the reverse osmosis membrane module. Under the high pressure, water molecules penetrate the semipermeable membrane, while most dissolved salts, bacteria, and organic matter are retained, resulting in high-purity product water and a high-concentration concentrate. The selective permeability of reverse osmosis membranes is key to their efficient purification. Systems typically utilize multiple membrane stages to improve recovery and desalination rates.

 

Finally, the produced water enters post-treatment, which, depending on the intended use, may include UV sterilization, microfiltration, or mineral addition to meet the water quality requirements of various applications. The concentrate is then discharged or further treated to meet environmental requirements.

 

Commercial reverse osmosis systems, with their high efficiency, energy efficiency, and high degree of automation, have become a vital component of modern water treatment solutions.
